 Bluecoat school uniform
Here we collect information (we could gather so far) about the
history of the blue coat school uniform. This uniform dates back to
tudor times. Today there is only one school left where the students
wear this uniform on a daily basis, the Christ's Hospital School in
Horsham, Kent.

Hier sammeln wir Informationen (die wir bislang finden konnten) über
die Geschichte der Blue Coat Schuluniformen. Ihr Ursprung hat diese
Uniform in Tudor-Zeiten. Heutzutage gibt es nur noch eine Schule, in
der die Schüler täglich diese Uniform tragen, in der Christ's
Hospital School in Horsham, Kent.

Uniform
The main element of the uniform is a long dark cassock-like blue coat.
The coat is belted at the waist. Below the coat the boys wore a shirt,
a neckband (decorated in streamer-style) and knee breeches. With the
dark blue breeches yellow stockings were worn.
Uniform
Zuerst fällt der lange, dunkelblaue Mantel auf. Der Mantel wird
mit Gürtel getragen. Unterhalb trugen die Jungen ein Hemd und ein
Band um den Kragen, an denen zwei lange Enden sind die vorne über
den Mantel geklappt wurden. Dazu wurden Kniehosen und gelbe Strümpfe
getragen.

Reading Blue Coat School. The way he is posing he gives the impression
that he feels responsible for the family.

This boy from Bristol probably was student of Queen
Elizabeth's Hospital School. The school still is situated in Clifton,
Bristol.

Most likely this Bristol boy also was a student of
Queen Elizabeth's Hospital School. We carefully tried to colour the
photo in the correct shades.

Situation today
Today only at the Christ's Hospital School in Horsham, UK students still
wear the Blue Coat uniform on a daily basis. Now there is a version
of the uniform for boys and girls. The main difference of the girl's
version is the skirt instead of breeches.
There are some schools that still carry the "bluecoat" in
their name but have the abandoned the traditional uniform. But some
use them on special occassions.
Some examples:

Die heutige Situation
Heutzutage tragen nur noch die Schüler, und jetzt auch Schülerinnen,
der Christ's Hospital School in Horsham die Blue Coat Uniform täglich.
Statt der Hose tragen die Schülerinnen allerdings eine Rock zur
Uniform. Es gibt noch immer einige Schulen, die das "Blue Coat"
noch in ihrem Namen tragen, die Uniform aber abgeschafft haben. Zumindest
wird sie bei einigen noch an besonderen Tagen getragen.
